AT&T donates tablets to non-profits during 'acts of kindness' week | Business
In celebration of Random Acts of Kindness Week, AT&T* made surprise stops to three Tucson area nonprofits to give the gift of technology to those who need it.
Random Acts of Kindness Week is a time dedicated to inspiring individuals to practice kindness and to pass it on to others in the community. In addition to the tablet donations, local AT&T employees are donating their time to serve as volunteers for the organizations throughout the year.
“As a part of the Tucson community, we strive to support organizations that provide much needed services to residents," said Vicki Martin, vice president and general manager of AT&T Arizona, in a recent news release. “Technology has evolved to help people in many ways. We hope these organizations, and the individuals they serve, will find these tablets as a valuable resource in their amazing programs.”
Each tablet is enabled with data service, allowing the nonprofits to utilize AT&T’s recently launched 4G LTE network in Tucson. The tablets will help each nonprofit in the following ways:
- Literacy Connects is committed to offering learning opportunities for a wide range of individuals in the community, including reading and computer skills, English acquisition, and artistic self-expression. The tablets will support the program’s “Stories that Soar!” for children, which empowers young people to believe in themselves by giving a voice to their original words and creative ideas.
- Tucson OASIS offers seniors the opportunity to enhance their lives, by taking classes and programs in technology, arts, humanities, health, and more. The tablets will be used to support senior tech workshops, tutoring for children K-5 who need help bringing their reading skills up to grade level, and CATCH Healthy Habits, which links kids and adult mentors in an anti-obesity, healthy eating and exercise program.
- Easter Seals Blake Foundation has been providing services to children and adults with disabilities since 1950. The tablet donation will allow the ESBF early intervention team, serving children age birth to three years, the opportunity to explore different communication options families can use with their child who may be exhibiting language delays. The tablets will also be used to enhance the living skills of residents of Community Living Services, which is a residential care program for adults with cognitive disabilities.
“Technology is something that helps connect all generations,” said David Eppihimer, Tucson OASIS Executive Director. “These tablets will serve as a valuable resource to our organization that will help us introduce more people to new technology.”
“Having devices that can handle all our needs will make our rehearsal process easier and more efficient,” said Dallas Thomas, Literacy Connects Production Manager for Stories that Soar! “These tablets will allow us to create all the rehearsal notes, script changes, videos and photos we need. They are a very welcome addition to the program.”
The tablets received by the nonprofits will be fast, as AT&T launched its 4G LTE network in Tucson in December, which delivers speeds up to 10 times faster than 3G**, as well as multiple innovations that optimize the network for performance.
