Tucson receives top honors for recycling program | Environment
Tucson received a high honor yesterday, from the Arizona Recycling Coalition (AZRC), being named the Municipality of the Year for their recycling efforts.
The AZRC recognizes both public and private entities and individuals who have stood out in promoting their recycling and waste diversion to the public, as well as providing ways for that public to reduce and divert materials from landfills.
With the ‘Do More Blue’ Recycling program, the City of Tucson Environmental Services Department (ES) had a banner year in 2012. This was highlighted by the partnership between the City and ReCommunity, Inc. and the opening of a new state-of-the-art Materials Recovery Facility; both of which enabled ES to increase the variety of accepted material for recycling to include all plastic containers.
Adding to list for the ES was the creation of the Recycling Rewards Program, which rewards residents for proper recycling, and the Commercial Waste Audits program another successful venture.
The Commercial Waste Audits program, since 2010 has had over 350 businesses adding 20 percent more recycling to their collection services.
The award was given to the City yesterday at the AZRC’s annual conference lunch.
