Sun City Oro Valley Astronomy Club donating telescopes to K-8 school | News
Members of the Sun City Oro Valley Astronomy Club are giving students at Coronado K-8 School an amazing opportunity to explore the stars. For the fifth year in a row, the club will provide telescopes for every 5th grade student in the school.
In a recent news release from the Amphitheater Public School District, Astronomy Club member Bob Cratty stated, “The idea behind it is to get them interested in science and math, using astronomy as a hook.”
Club members are expected to deliver the telescopes to three classes on October 2 at 8:10 a.m., 10:35 a.m., and 12:50 p.m. The members will then show the students how to use the equipment, as well as returning to the school throughout the year for instruction and nighttime viewing. Club members will also be joining students for “Astro Night” in November.
The Astronomy Club has also purchased two eight inch “GoTo” telescopes for the school. They include mounts and related software that automatically point the telescopes to astronomical objects that the students select.
